In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as an archetypal hero. He undergoes incredible trials and tribulations, displaying courage, strength, loyalty and resourcefulness throughout his journey home to Ithaca.

Through the trials, he displays several heroic qualities – bravery, intelligence, perseverance and loyalty – which make him a classic hero in literature. His physical prowess and cunning are traits that make him stand out as an epic hero. He often uses these skills to help him survive against both natural forces such as storms or sea monsters, as well as more human-like struggles such as opposing armies or gods.

To further illustrate this point, we will turn to specific examples from The Odyssey as well as other sources which demonstrate just how heroic Odysseus was during his long journey home from Troy. Finally, we shall consider what modern society can learn from such a timeless character and how the heroism of Odysseus continues to be relevant even now in the 21st century.

Additionally, he demonstrates great perseverance while journeying home despite all obstacles thrown in his way by Poseidon – showing that it can be achieved with enough determination. The gods even acknowledge this heroic feat when Hera says “You alone of all mortals can endure such labor” (Homer 8).

Furthermore, Odysseus shows great strength in his ability to take on numerous challenges and remain standing no matter how difficult they may be. In each trial he faces, whether it be with Polyphemos or Scyllia, Odysseus finds the courage within himself to come out victorious. This sense of inner-strength makes him an exemplary hero who is willing to risk everything for the sake of completing his mission.

Odysseus did not hesitate when it came time to face the Cyclops, even knowing that it would be a difficult battle. “But I, standing fast on either side of him and gripping both hands tight, drove the timber straight in -”(223).

Even though this act put Odysseus’s life at risk, he didn’t think twice about doing what was necessary for the betterment of his crew. The concept of loyalty is also something that Odysseus excels in. One example being when Athena helps guide him throughout The Odyssey; showing her loyal commitment to helping him achieve success.

He shows his strength by fighting his opponents who are Cyclops, Zeus and Poseidon’s sons, sirens, Scylla and Charybdis. His cleverness comes in handy as he uses it to outsmart Cyclops and devise elaborate plans to get past other obstacles on his journey home from Troy.
