Theme of loss in Romeo and Juliet

In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, sword fights are among the most exciting parts. Death is a theme seen several times throughout the play: by Mercutio, Romeo, and Juliet. The first reference to death occurs in act three, scene 1. Mercutio challenges Tybalt to a sword fight in the scene, saying, “Ask for me tomorrow, and you’ll find yourself buried.”

Paris witnessed Romeo’s visit to Juliet’s grave that night and everything that happened while they were there. The tension is high at first as an argument occurs, but the mood changes when Balthasar arrives and Romeo reveals he is on his way out to kill Montague. You’ll be amazed by how much goes down when two characters enter at the same time.

Romeo recognizes Paris as the man who killed Tybalt, as well as Juliet. Paris confronted him and attacked him. Romeo’s body is buried next to Juliet’s in the tomb where Romeo and Juliet are buried.

This death scene also shows how many people were affected by Romeo and Juliet’s death since they had ended up at the same place without having planned on it. The graveyard set conveys that moral lesson about life: no matter how much we plan, things don’t turn out as we expect them to.

I think Romeo and Juliet show us that life doesn’t stop after a loved one dies. There are always lessons to be learned from the tragedy, even if we don’t understand them right away. The way Romeo and Juliet were able to look past their family’s quarrels to experience love and the consequences of death shows how strong people can be during times of darkness. It also gives insight into what happens when societal pressures become too great for some individuals or couples like these two star-crossed lovers.

Romeo and Juliet have sealed their fate in the play, despite their last-ditch attempts to preserve their love. They went to unconventional lengths to protect their love, and in the end, you feel saddened by their senseless murder but troubled by their unconventional actions. Their deaths should not be glorified or idealized as examples of desperate and tragic attempts that ultimately led to their demise.
