Political Papers

The current state of American politics can only be described as peculiar. Never in history has the American public been more divisive than they are now, except during the Civil War. From mask mandates to reproductive rights, the warring Conservatives and Liberals cannot reach a consensus on any matter.

Nothing exemplifies the polarization between Republican and Democrat-leaning populations more than the events of Jan 6, 2021. Political extremism led to an unbelievable insurrection because a section of Republican senators, including former President Donald Trump, continued to stoke lies about the 2020 elections. Months of aggression spilled into what is one of the most shameful days in the history of American democracy.

A year has passed since, and the political divide has only widened. With recent attacks on Roe vs. Wade, Republican states are trying to repeal the landmark ruling and reverse the legal status of abortions. Meanwhile, the Biden Administration is working to protect the reproductive rights of American citizens as afforded by Roe vs. Wade. However, they are unlikely to stop the Republicans from making moves because of the filibuster.

Moreover, it’s uncanny that the two political parties and their followers cannot seem to agree on basic COVID guidelines. The propagation that the COVID vaccine is unsafe and other misinformation from Republican Senators has resulted in many people refusing to take the life-saving dose.

In addition, the Republican Senators’ blatant disregard for mask rules and their encouragement for other people to follow has resulted in an astonishing number of mask-related violence.

Although it’s not the first time the country has witnessed polarization, the present atmosphere in America is exceptionally volatile. Having any political opinion can have severe repercussions. Most people have adopted the mentality that “you are either with us or against us.” There seems to be no common ground or even any effort to “agree to disagree.”
